🏛️ Our Heritage
The Bunts (also known as Bunt or Nadava) are a historically significant community from the coastal regions of Karnataka and Kerala in South India. With roots tracing back centuries, the Bunt community has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of Tulu Nadu – the Tulu-speaking coastal region comprising the districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka, and parts of Kasaragod in Kerala.
Historical Significance
Bunts have traditionally been:
- Landed Aristocracy: Historically, Bunts were the dominant landholding community in Tulu Nadu, managing vast agricultural estates and playing a crucial role in the region’s agrarian economy
- Warriors and Administrators: Many Bunts served as local chieftains, military commanders, and administrators under various kingdoms, including the Alupa dynasty and later the Kingdom of Mysore
- Cultural Custodians: The community has been instrumental in preserving and promoting Tulu culture, language, folk traditions like Yakshagana, and unique customs such as the matrilineal Aliyasantana system
- Pioneers in Education: The community has established numerous educational institutions, enabling generations to pursue higher education and professional careers
